SUMMARY
Optimus 2 (also referred to as Optimus V2 or Optimus V2.5) is Tesla’s second‑generation humanoid robot, developed between late 2022 and mid‑2024.
It introduced major improvements in mobility, manipulation, joint design, and vision‑based imitation learning, forming the technological foundation that later evolved into Optimus 3.
Optimus 2 demonstrated Tesla’s first credible steps toward a general‑purpose humanoid, capable of basic locomotion, object handling, and simple industrial tasks.
While not production‑ready, it marked the transition from prototype to pre‑industrial platform.
EDITORIAL
Optimus 2 is the robot that shifted Tesla’s humanoid program from “concept” to serious engineering effort.
This generation introduced:
• Tesla‑designed electric actuators
• Improved joint coverings and mechanical refinement
• 11‑DOF hands (precursor to the 22‑DOF Gen‑3 system)
• Unified control policies
• Vision‑based imitation learning
• Early autonomous locomotion
Optimus 2 was still limited — battery life was short, manipulation was basic, and the robot lacked tactile sensing — but it demonstrated rapid iteration speed and Tesla’s ability to leverage its automotive AI stack for robotics.
This version is historically important because it is the first Optimus that could walk reliably, grasp objects, and perform simple tasks without human teleoperation.
